University of Michigan Timelines

Rules from the Handbook for
University of Michigan Women, 1921-1922

Social Engagements

(A) Freshmen may have evening engagements, either with men or girls, only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

Afternoon engagements must terminate at the dinner hour. Dinner engagements must terminate at eight.

Note - Any meetings authorized by the University faculty, such as mass meetings, lectures, and choral union concerts, shall not be considered engagements.

(B) According to a ruling of the University Senate, permission for all dances must be obtained from the Student Affairs Committee. Professor Bursley is chairman, and his office is in Room 8, University Hall. Mid-week dances [are] not allowed except before a holiday. All Saturday night dances must close at 12 o'clock and Friday night dances at 1 o'clock.

(C) Engagements for the river and boulevard must terminate at 10 p.m. Before going on the river, girls must leave their names with either the house-head or matron. This is necessary in case there should be an accident.

Closing Hours

All houses must close and engagements terminate at 10:30 p.m., except on Friday and Saturday nights, when the hour is 11 p.m. Special arrangements must be made with the house-head or matron if girls have dancing, theater, or concert engagements which will keep them out later than the closing hour.

Absences from Town

Girls expecting to leave town must leave addresses with the house-head or matron (that they may be reached in case of telegrams, sickness, etc.)

Quiet Hours

Definite quiet hours, during which no undue noise shall be made in rooms or corridors, shall be determined upon and strictly enforced. The following hours have been found convenient, but are merely suggested:

Week-days - 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; 7 p.m. on.

Saturdays - 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Sundays - 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; 7 p.m. on.

General

Experience has shown the necessity for the following suggestions:

(A) It is suggested that girls do not go to men's rooming houses or fraternities for dinners or calls unless assured a chaperone will be present. Girls are advised not to go to hotels unchaperoned.

(B) Substitution at lectures incurs liability to discipline.

(C) It is suggested that calling hours for men shall not begin until 3 p.m., except on Sundays.
