Scientific Activities at the Detroit Observatory

President Tappan built an astronomical observatory at the University of Michigan in an effort to transform the U of M into one of the first research universities in the United States. At this time, education in the United States did not include the emerging sciences, but focused on a classical curriculum. The Detroit Obsevatory became the first research laboratory at the University, and over the years it contributed to many scientific innovations and activities on campus. The primary ways the Detroit Observatory contributed to science included:
