Suggested Research Topics - Broadcast a Michigan Football Game

The student would write an "announcer's script" for the play-by-play and commentary of a UM football game. The Bentley now holds the Athletic Dept. films of UM football games from the 1930's on. With a few exceptions these are silent films. The student would view the game film (actually we would probably transfer the film to videotape) and then use the game rundowns (a description of each play), the game program, media guides, scouting reports, and the scrapbook newspaper clippings to re-create the game. This paper would also include a pre-game introduction setting the stage for the game and a post-game wrap-up and analysis. If not a complete play-by play "broadcast" of the game, the student might write a "Michigan Replay" type script as though he were coach Crisler or Oosterbaan recapping the game in the style of coach Carr's Sunday morning television show.

In an effort to encourage creative thinking about possible research topics for students unfamiliar with archives and their inevitable complexities, archivists and student employees of the Bentley Historical Library have authored "suggested research topics ." The purpose of these is not to define a topic but rather to stimulate thinking about a topic where the holdings of the Bentley Library are particularly strong.
