Suggested Research Topics - Radio and Television Broadcasting of UM Football and Basketball
In this paper the researcher would first attempt to establish the basic factual record and chronology. When were the first radio and television broadcasts made? Over what stations? Who were the announcers? Who have been the radio broadcasters of UM games? How many years were football games shown "live" in movie theaters?
In addition to the Board in Control records, the papers of Yost, Crisler and Canham may provide information on policy issues and contractual and financial matters. How were broadcast rights and sponsorships awarded?. How were announcers selected? Who were the major sponsors? Why were television broadcasts of football games banned in 1952? It may not be possible to do more than establish the basic chronology of UM athletics broadcasts but even that would useful information. Roziek's paper answers some questions on television broadcasts but little if anything has been written on radio coverage.

In an effort to encourage creative thinking about possible research topics for students unfamiliar with archives and their inevitable complexities, archivists and student employees of the Bentley Historical Library have authored "suggested research topics ." The purpose of these is not to define a topic but rather to stimulate thinking about a topic where the holdings of the Bentley Library are particularly strong.
