Sara at Michigan Stadium
At The Daily: For Stillman the Daily was a great place to experience photo-journalism side by side with working professionals. She photographed the national championship football season and Rose Bowl of 1997, the 1996 presidential campaign and Clinton's second inauguration. She also created several photo essay features of life around Ann Arbor while photographing at the Daily.
After The Daily:
Sara Stillman is an award winning artist and arts instructor who currently teaches visual arts to 7th-12th grade students at Emery Secondary School in Emeryville, CA., and has taught art to students of all ages in New York City and in the San Francisco Bay Area. She presents nationally on arts education topics and teachers from across the nation have come to her classroom to learn from her craft. Stillman studied Photography and Fiber Arts at the University of Michigan, where she completed her BFA. She holds a Masters in Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. While in Ann Arbor, Sara volunteered with the Michigan Department of Corrections teaching art to prisoners, an experience that inspired her to pursue teaching. In New York City she worked in the photo department at ESPN The Magazine. Sara and her students' work have been featured on national television programs, including "Martha Stewart Living", as well as in books, and several museums and galleries.
The Sara Stillman Collection: The majority of the collection, which Sara donated to the Bentley Library in 2005, documents her work on the Daily sports beat. She covered men's basketball 1995-1997 and football during the 1996 and national championship 1997 seasons, including the 1998 Rose Bowl Game. Two of her Rose Bowl shots of Brian Griese and Charles Woodson have been frequently used by the Athletic Department and in several publications. The collection also contains some photos of softball, wrestling and men's and women's tennis. The other photos in the collection reflect a broad range of Daily assignments. Most of the images relate to the arts, political events and student activities. Of special note are the negatives related to affirmative action, the pro/affirmative action organization BAMN (By Any Means Necessary) and the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The images in the Daily project include images scanned at the request of Bentley patrons and a selection made by Bentley staff.
