Often seen as a precursor to World War II, the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s left a deep impression at the University of Michigan.

Students and faculty organized in support of the Spanish Republic and against the rise of fascism, and four students even volunteered to fight with the Abraham Lincoln brigade of foreign volunteers in the conflict. Join us to hear Juli Highfill, Professor of Spanish literature and culture in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, share this little known story from U-M’s past.
