A new online class offered through U-M’s School of Education explores the history of Michigan football and beyond.
“The History of Michigan Football, Vol. I (1879–1927): Education and Athletics” is an online course that looks at the dramatic rise of college football through the story of the University of Michigan.
Taught by U-M Lecturer Greg Dooley, the class traces the origins of the game from the late 1800s, through its explosion in Ann Arbor, up to the opening of Michigan Stadium in 1927. Along the way it explores the great moments, reforms, controversies, traditions, and larger-than-life personalities that shaped Michigan football history.
“Michigan football is about much more than wins and losses,” says Dooley. “It’s a story of innovation, tradition, larger-than-life personalities, and the ways athletics helped shape the university itself. This course is designed for Michigan alumni, fans, and anyone curious about how one football program became such an enduring part of American sports culture.”
The class will be fully online, and enrollees can complete the course at their own pace.
