About Genealogy at the Bentley

The Bentley Historical Library, which is a repository for original, unpublished archival and manuscript collections pertaining to the history of the University of Michigan and the state of Michigan, has considerable materials of interest to the genealogist. A large concentration of our materials focuses on Washtenaw County. There is, however, considerable information on many other counties in Michigan. Materials of interest include printed histories of counties and towns, city directories, census indexes, plat books, newspapers, and Washtenaw County censuses. For additional material, please see our relevant family history sources on the main genealogy page.

It is important to note that the Bentley Historical Library does not have vital records. These can be found through county clerk offices throughout the state and also through the Public Health Department. The National Center for Health Statistics has an online guide for locating vital records and the State Archives of Michigan has an online listing of Michigan county clerks. The Bentley Historical Library does hold many compilations containing collected information about birth, baptism, marriage, funeral, and death notices.

Genealogists who are unable to visit the Bentley Historical Library are encouraged to send their requests to the Reference Department. Time permitting, the reference staff devotes one hour to any one written request. Pertinent dates, names, and places assist the reference staff in its search.

A staff member is available to speak to genealogical or historical societies on such topics as "Using Resources at the Bentley Historical Library," "Resources Used for Genealogical Research," and "Internet Resources for Genealogy."
