Major Elizabeth Allen, PhD was Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan from 1976 to 2007. She served in the United States Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War as Head Nurse of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the 71st Evacuation Hospital in Pleiku during the Tet Offensive in 1968. She was one of fewer than 100 African American nurses deployed. She was appointed by Governor of Michigan James Blanchard to the Agent Orange Commission in 1987. Throughout her career, she advocated for veterans, particularly for women and African Americans, and has created greater awareness surrounding veterans’ issues, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the effect it can have on military families.

The Elizabeth Ann Allen papers document Allen’s role as Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and her service in the United States Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War, as well as the military service of three generations of her family. The papers highlight her personal experience as a Vietnam veteran living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
