U of M Women's Synchronized Swimming
Synchronized swimming was one of the six original varsity sports for women. The Women's Athletic Association and Michifish had a long tradition of competition at the club sport level. Under the coaching of Joyce Lindeman, the varsity team enjoyed considerable success, finishing second in the national Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women tournament in 1977 and 1978. Ruth Pickett, All-American in 1978-1979, was selected for the AIAW's Broderick Award, as the outstanding woman collegiate athlete of the year in 1979.
Synchronized swimming was dropped as a varsity sport in 1981 when the women's athletic program began competing under the aegis of the NCAA. Synchronized swimming was not a recognized NCAA sport.
