Due to a move by the student-alumni-advisory board (of which he was a member) to have only former students as coaches of the football team, Ferbert replaced William Ward in 1897. Ferbert was an 1897 Michigan graduate and outstanding halfback on the 1894-1896 Wolverine squads. Ferbert coached the team to its first Big Ten title in the 1898 season.
