A photocopy of a letter (Oct. 29, 1864) written to an unknown person discussing a victory over General Early and the editorial policy of the Detroit Free Press. Custer, from Monroe, Mich., was a lieutenant in the U. S. Cavalry at the outbreak of the war. In June 1863 he assumed command of the Michigan Cavalry Brigade as brigadier general and was breveted five times during the 1863-1865 period of the war.
