Michigan in the Civil War
Demmon, Isaac Newton, 1842-1920.
Two letters (June 14 and July 19, 1864) written to his sister. He describes the country while on picket duty, the health of the regiment, camp life, the hospitals at Nashville and the State House, and mentions especially the camp's water supply. Demmon served in the 132nd Indiana Infantry in the campaign of 1864 in Tennessee and Alabama. After the war he graduated from the University of Michigan, entered the teaching profession, and eventually became head of the English Department at the University of Michigan.
The collection also includes one letter (April 17, 1865) from Demmon's brother-in-law Levi Dowling, relating his appointment as divisional chaplain and topographical engineer on General Egan's staff in the 3rd Provisional Division. Dowling describes his preaching of a memorial sermon for Lincoln.
