Twenty letters (1862-1864) written while he was in Company A, 19th Michigan Infantry, as sergeant. He comments on his Negro servant and Negroes working on fortifications, Tennessee women, the cost of food, a river trip, the country, the weather, the battlefield at Chickamauga, and family matters. He describes an amusing incident concerning a bee tree. One letter tells of the battle of Thompson's Station, Tenn., his capture, and the trip to Libby prison. Griffis, of Wayne, Mich., was killed in action at Resaca, Ga.
