Halliday was major and commissary officer in the Confederate army. The collection includes an account book (Jan.-Apr. 1865) kept while he was stationed at Gainesville Junction, Miss., of supplies issued and work done. It includes employment records of slaves hired as laborers. The volume was later used as a payroll record book (June-Oct. 1865) of the 46th Illinois Infantry.
