Michigan in the Civil War

Hayden family

The papers of this Bedford, Mich., family include three letters written by Jasper Hayden to home folks from before Petersburg October 2, 1864; Fort Keene, Va., March 19, 1865; and near City Point April 15, 1865. Much of each letter concerns affairs at home on the farm. He also tells of "cooking grub" for fifteen men in his detachment; of Sheridan's raids in the Valley; of being appointed corporal and having to buy new clothes; on being on guard mount; and of Lee's surrender. Hayden was in Battery H, 1st Ohio Light Artillery.
