Typewritten copy of his journal (Feb.-Nov. 1863) kept while he was serving in Company K, 4th Michigan Infantry. He writes of camp life and duties, his quarters, and amusing incidents such as the "battle" with the insects, and being sold plaster of Paris for flour. He speaks of bushwhackers, a visit from Governor and Mrs. Austin Blair, a grand review. He describes the burial of the dead, execution of deserters, the battle of Chancellorsville, the march north to Gettysburg, the sights along the way, and the battle. Houghton, of Cohoctah, Mich., was drafted for nine months and discharged at the expiration of his term.
