Michigan in the Civil War
Jelley, Edward, 1839-1917.
Thirteen letters with transcripts (Aug. 1863-1864) from Corinth, Miss., Lagrange, Tenn., and St. Louis, Mo. They speak of skirmishes with guerrillas, camp life, guard duty, and punishment meted out to him when he refused to black his boots. Because of the taunts of his comrades over this episode and his dislike of officers, he deserted May 16, 1864. He was in Company C, 3rd Michigan Cavalry. In 1861 he had been in Company H, 44th Illinois Infantry, but was discharged in February of 1862 because of disability. Jelley was from Lawrence, Mich.
