Michigan in the Civil War

This collection of papers relating to her ancestors collected by Margaret Leutheuser of Ann Arbor, Mich.,includes Civil War materials of Morgan L. Leach. Leach enlisted in Company D, 1st Michigan Cavalry, in Aug. 1861. He was taken prisoner, paroled, and discharged Oct. 1862. He re-entered service as assistant surgeon in the 9th Michigan Cavalry, Nov. 1862, and resigned because of disability July 1864. One letter (Sept. 27, 1863) was written to Leach's mother, from near Jonesboro, Tenn. The collection also includes a scrapbook of clippings of letters (Aug. 27, 1861-June 14, 1862) written by Leach and published in a newspaper.
