Maltman, John S., 1840-
Photocopy of a typescript of a letter, written in diary form, from Knoxville, Tenn., Nov. 21-Dec. 5, 1863. He tells of marching and skirmishing, the retreat to Knoxville and the siege and defense of Knoxville. The death of Lieutenant Colonel Comstock is mentioned. Maltman was in Company E and Company H, 17th Michigan Infantry, as sergeant and lieutenant, 1862-1865. He was taken prisoner at Spotsylvania. Maltman was from Ypsilanti, Mich.
