Newton family
The papers of this Avon Township, Mich., family include one letter (Feb. 22, 1863) written by George H. Newton from a camp in Virginia to his sister. He tells of the salute to Washington's birthday, snow, lost box from home, and expected replacements in the regiment with drafted men. Newton enlisted in Company B, 5th Michigan Infantry, and became a sergeant. The collection also includes one letter (July 31, 1865) from Thomas, surname unknown, of the 29th Michigan Infantry, written from Murfreesboro.
