Michigan in the Civil War
North, S. Jack (Samson Jackson)
Seven letters (May 5, 1863-April 24, 1865) from Chattanooga, Rome, Ga., Goldsboro, N. C., and Holly Springs, N. C., written to his wife while he was serving as captain of Co. F, 74th Indiana Infantry. He tells of a foraging expedition; hauling wood; company inspection; dress parade and drilling. He pays a "Dixie contraband" to cook and wash for him and black his boots. He thinks the chaplain is "a fine man." The men in the company are in good health. There are rumors (April 24, 1865 letter) that they soon will be going home. North was a resident of Kosciusko County, Ind.
The collection includes originals and transcripts of the letters, as well as a partial subject index.
