Phelps was a resident of Scio Township, Washtenaw County, Mich., who served in Company D, 20th Michigan Infantry. The collection contains photocopies and some typescripts of correspondence, primarily with his parents, describing his activities in the army. Phelps was killed at Spotsylvania.
