Shepard, Irwin W., 1843-1916.

Shepard was a student at Michigan State Normal College who served in Company E, 17th Michigan Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Later in life Shepard lived in Winona, Minn. The collection contains a carbon copy of typescripts of letters (Aug. 1862-Apr. 1864) written to his family in Chelsea, Mich. describing in detail his activities including the Battle of Fredericksburg and sieges of Vicksburg and Knoxville.
