Michigan in the Civil War

Sutton family

The papers of the family of Himan Sutton of Stanton, Mich., include one letter (May 16, 1862) written by John H. Bender to his mother. He tells her about the crops, the weather, and the mud in Virginia that he observed while on a march. He also crossed a battlefield where the dead were still unburied. Bender, from Jamestown, Mich., was in Company I, 3rd Michigan Infantry from April to August, 1862, when he died of disease.
