Sutton, John A., 1840-1862.
Four letters (May-Sept. 1862) written while he was serving in Company F, 1st Michigan Infantry. He tells about the battle of Gaines' Mill, his quarters, conditions in Portsmouth where the women wear Rebel flags, and describes the march from Harrison Landing to Alexandria. Sutton, from Washtenaw County, Mich., was killed in action at Fredericksburg.
The collection also contains one letter (Jan. 24, 1863) from Arthur Edwards telling of the death of John A. Sutton. Edwards, from Trenton, Mich., was chaplain of the 1st Michigan Infantry at the time, but became captain and assistant quartermaster, and brevet major, lieutenant colonel and colonel, 1863-66.
