The family of Abel and Hannah Bingham lived in Sault Ste. Marie and Grand Rapids, Mich. The collection includes letters written to John C. Buchanan, Bingham's son-in-law, while Buchanan served with the 8th Michigan Infantry, as well as four letters from Charlie Hulbert, a grandson of the Binghams serving in the 94th New York Infantry. Hulbert's letters (Jan. 1863-Jan.1865) were written from Virginia. John C. Buchanan's letters are found in the Buchanan family collection.
