"The Student Volunteer," a biography of William Visscher, written by Harvey L. Visher. It incorporates the Civil War letters William wrote (Feb. 20-July 25, 1865) while serving in Company K, 16th Michigan Infantry. These letters give descriptions of his first Sunday in Camp Blair, Jackson; the trip to Virginia; a battle near Petersburg; foraging when supplies are cut off; Lee's surrender and the death of Lincoln; the march to Washington; his bout with diarrhea and stay in a hospital at Jeffersonville, Ind., while on his way home to be discharged.
