Michigan in the Civil War
Watson, Edward Michael, 1840-1906.
Seventy letters (1862-1864, originals and typescripts) written to members of his family. Watson entered the service as corporal in Company B, 1st Michigan Cavalry. He was wounded in action at Morristown, Tenn., sent to Michigan to recruit, and returned to serve as lieutenant and captain in Company L, 9th Michigan Cavalry. His letters give very interesting details of camp life, equipment and recreation; of food and food pedlars, the weather; picket duty; skirmishes; and descriptions of the country, especially around Washington. He stresses the humorous episodes as much as possible. Before and after the war Watson, of Marquette, Mich., was a merchant.
