Wisner, Moses, 1815-1863
Seventeen letters (1862) written to his wife and children. They concern camp life, his illness, the people and the countryside of Kentucky, and home affairs. Wisner, of Pontiac, Mich., entered the service as colonel in the 22nd Michigan Infantry, July 17, 1862, and died of typhoid fever at Lexington, Ky., Jan. 5, 1863. Before entering the service, he was a lawyer and governor of Michigan, 1859-1861. A letter (Sept. 29, 1862) written to Mrs. Wisner by Asher E. Mather, chaplain of the 22nd Infantry concerns Wisner's first illness.
