Michigan in the Civil War

Fyfe family

The papers of the Fyfe family of Lansing, Mich., include twenty letters (1864-1866) written by Jennie Fyfe to her sister describing Paducah, Ky., and her duties as a nurse in the hospital. She writes of conditions in the state, the plundering of the hospital by guerrillas, the battles going on around them, and the bravery of the Negro troops. She comments on the Southern women with whom she comes in contact, and on the chaplains and church services. After the war she taught in a Negro school.
