Michigan in the Civil War

Robinson, George D. (George Dorgue), d. 1873.

Robinson was an 1862 graduate of the University of Michigan. The collection includes a letter (June 12, 1861) containing description of personal matters, including summer plans, and the university president's recommendation that he not enlist in the army until after he graduates. Robinson apparently did not take the president's advice, as he was commissioned second lieutenant in the 75th New York Infantry Sept. 17, 1861. Robinson ended the war as colonel of the 97th U.S. Colored Infantry.
