John Bennett, of Decatur, Mich., enlisted in Company C, 4th Michigan Cavalry, Aug. 5, 1862. Promoted to First Sergeant, he was taken prisoner July 19, 1864, at Flint Hill Church, Ga. He was freed by Jan. 8, 1865, when he was commissioned Second Lieutenant. He was brevetted First Lieutenant for meritorious service in the capture of Jefferson Davis, and was mustered out July 1, 1865. The collection contains letters exchanged with his wife (1864) describing his service in Tennessee and Georgia, including one letter written after his capture. Also letters written to his wife Silas M. Rawson and Allen Ash, members of his regiment, after his capture. The collection does not describe the capture of Jefferson Davis.
