Michigan in the Civil War

Cook, John Potter, 1812-1884.

Cook was a Hillsdale, Mich., merchant. His papers contain one letter (July 10, 1861) written by James K Spence from Camp Mansfield, Washington, D.C., about conditions in the camp, especially scant rations. He also writes about the regiments encamped near them such as the New York 5th composed mostly of Germans. Spence was in Company E, 4th Michigan Infantry.
