The collection includes three letters (1863) written by Perrin V. Fox of Grand Rapids, Mich., to his wife. Fox was captain of Company D, Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, major in the First U. S. Veteran Volunteer Engineers, then lieutenant colonel and brevet colonel for faithful and efficient service.
The collection also contains five letters (1863-1865) written by Newton P. Fox to his mother in which he criticizes Copperheads in Grand Rapids, and the officers of his company. One letter from Stevenson, Ala., is about work on fortifications. Fox was in Company E, Michigan Engineers and Mechanics. He was transferred to U. S. Veteran Volunteer Engineers, and discharged in 1865 as sergeant major.
Also one letter (Apr. 24, 1864) written by William A. Naylor to Major Perrin V. Fox. He makes inquiry concerning the manning of gunboats being built at Bridgeport. Naylor was a captain in the 10th Indiana Battery then doing garrison duty at Chattanooga.
