Horton was a medical student at University of Michigan and 1862 graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City During the Civil War he served as surgeon in charge of batteries of the 6th Division, Army of Tennessee (1862), with the 8th Regiment Louisiana Volunteers of African Descent (1863), and surgeon with the 47th U.S. Colored Infantry (1864). He later lived in Kansas City, Mo. The collection contains letters (1862-1864) to his brother concerning his service in the western campaign in Mississippi and Louisiana, with particular mention of the siege of Vicksburg.
