The papers of this Sharon Township, Washtenaw County, Mich., family include letters and diary of John E. Irwin (who served with Company C, 20th Michigan Infantry), letters of his brother James Leman Irwin (who served with Company F, 20th Michigan Infantry), and letters of their family (these letters compiled and edited by Maxine Irwin White), also the diary of William B. Irwin of Delhi Township, Ingham County, Mich. (who served with Company H, 26th Michigan Infantry). The letters and diaries contain descriptions of battles from Fredericksburg to the fall of Petersburg, including the siege of Petersburg (during which James Leman Irwin was killed), and military life, and impressions of life at home during the war.
