The collection includes letters from three soldiers:
John McIsaacs of St. Clair County, Mich.. One letter (Feb. 15, 1865) speaks of an engagement with the Rebels, building fortifications, the pleasure of mail call, and the imprisonment of Frank and Patrick Moran. McIsaacs was in Company G, 5th Michigan Infantry, 1861-1865.
Frank Moran of New York State. Two letters (Apr. 24, 1864 and Mar. 8, 1865). He speaks of hopes for a speedy exchange of prisoners and then of the exchange of both himself and his brother Patrick. Moran was a lieutenant in 4th Excelsior Regiment, 73rd New York State Volunteers, and for several months a prisoner in Libby Prison.
Patrick Moran of New York State. Two letters (Dec. 27, 1863 and Aug. 29, 1864). He tells of an engagement with the Rebels at Orange Grove or Mine Run, Va., Nov. 27, 1863. Patrick Moran's regiment has not been identified.
