Raymond, William E.
There are two letters. In one, from Murfreesboro (Feb. 28, 1863), he said he didn't find the army a very desirable place in bad weather; and he had changed his mind about being able to whip the South with a few men after the battle of Stones River in which the northern army was nearly beaten.
In the field (June 5, 1864), he told about hard marching over rough country, and hard fighting in which three times they had driven the rebels from their works--Buzzard Roost, Resaca, and now--after nine days--in trenches before their works.
Raymond was from St. Joseph County, Mich. He enlisted in Company F, 11th Michigan Infantry in December, 1861; was appointed hospital steward and transferred to field and staff at Rossville, in December 1863, and discharged at Chattanooga in Dec., 1864.
