Mike Hammerstein

Tackle, 1985

Mike Hammerstein

Few have dominated on Michigan's defensive lines as did Mike Hammerstein. An intense player on the field, Hammerstein is best remembered for his relentless pass rushing and tackles for losses. Hammerstein tied a single season record for tackles for losses with 23 while setting the record for yardage lost, sacking opponents for 112 yards lost in 1985. That year's Fiesta Bowl winning squad, of which Hammerstein was selected the Most Valuable Player, surrendered a mere 8.1 points per game - among the nation's leaders. Named First Team AP, UPI, and Kodak All-American, the native of Wapakoneta, Ohio, finished his career as the third highest in career tackles for losses with 37 for 116 yards.
