John Maulbetsch
Halfback, 1914
Halfback John "Maulie" Maulbetsch was a true Ann Arbor product, starring at Ann Arbor High before becoming Michigan's ninth All-American. The "German Bullet" weighed only 153 pounds, but generated amazing power and speed. He outgained the entire Harvard backfield in 1914 although Michigan lost. Camp picked him over Crimson Tack Hardwick and Ring Lardner wrote: "If anyone tells you the East plays the best brand of football, Maulbetsch shot that theory full of holes."
